How products earn a place in the Fire & Plunge shortlist.

How we choose

How we choose products for the Fire & Plunge shortlist.

A product needs to make sense on three levels: format fit, ownership friction and retailer clarity. If it fails any one of those tests, it should not be here.

Research-led Retailer-verified Updated 14 April 2026

1. Start with the buyer question

Which version of the category is the buyer actually trying to solve?

We start by separating the real format choices: indoor versus outdoor, compact versus statement piece, quiet daily use versus higher output.

2. Pressure-test ownership

Can a buyer actually live with it after delivery day?

Power draw, folded depth, drainage, delivery access, outdoor placement and setup burden matter early because they decide whether the product survives real life.

3. Check retailer clarity

Is the merchant page specific enough to buy from with confidence?

We look for retailers that publish enough detail to support a serious decision: dimensions, bundle contents, warranty wording, shipping notes and other practical facts.

4. Rank the tradeoffs honestly

Does this product deserve a place once the compromises are stated plainly?

Not every strong product is the cheapest or the flashiest. Some stay because they solve a specific buyer problem better than the alternatives around them.

What we use

Published specs, policy pages, imagery and buyer-facing support language.

Unless we explicitly say otherwise, our notes are based on retailer listings, official product imagery, support material and UK-specific ownership friction.

What we do not claim

No fake testing claims, whole-of-market promises or made-up medical language.

The strongest product notes stay clear, believable and specific about what they actually know and what they do not.

FAQ

Questions people ask before they buy

Do you test every product hands-on?

No. Unless a page clearly says hands-on testing happened, assume the notes are based on published merchant material, retailer support language and our own product analysis.

Do affiliate relationships decide what gets included?

No. Some links may earn commission, but inclusion still depends on whether the product and the retailer meet our standards. Commercial fit does not guarantee coverage.

How do you update or correct older pages?

We review older pages when categories, retailer detail or product availability changes. If a page needs a factual correction or a retailer link changes materially, we update it rather than leave stale guidance in place.
